What Makes Me Cry: Mindy Kaling

A Timeline of love for Mindy Kaling

October 2009- I cry and laugh and clap my hands over the Mindy written episode of The Office, Niagra, also known as Jim and Pam's wedding.

September 2011 -I read an article written by Mindy in the New Yorker and post a quote from it.

November 2011- I fall in love with Mindy's blog.

January 2012 - I read (and adore!) Mindy's book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and other concerns)

February 2012 - Mindy's defense of the rom-com supports my defense of This Means War

March 2012 - I begin the What Makes Me Cry series, inspired by a chapter in Mindy's book

March 2012  John Mayer Being a jerk
April 2012 Mr. Lauer and The Duchess
June 2012 Hugh Jackman is a Class Act

May 2012 - The trailer for Mindy's brand new sitcom is released!

August 2012 -I watch the pilot episode of The Mindy Project online and feel like she is speaking to me.  When you watch it, you'll know exactly which part I'm talking about.

September 9 2012- I start to browse this article on Vulture which I think is about Mindy's new show, but suddenly I'm reading about her mother's death and I get to the part about "be your own best friend" and I've given myself hiccups from crying so much.

September 10 2012- Try to tell my mom about the article, immediately start crying.

September 24 2012- The Mindy Project, written and created and starring Mindy Kaling (and inspired by her mom) premieres on Fox at 9:30pm.  You know I'll be watching.

Happy Weekend!

And its Friday!  Hope you have a pretty cocktail

or a pretty day in your future!

It's been awhile since I've done one of these, so here's what I've been up to lately . . .

CFC Class, where I talk about feminist issues, animal rights, and Twilight PR Scandals

The first two installments of another series about movies I love

Three of my favorite people getting married
WWEMD
(side note- was there really a cheating scandal!? say it aint so!)

Reviews of movies still in theaters

And something new, a CFC weekly round-up if you will.

Look of the Week: Sutton Foster, Bunheads finale

I think I'm the only person in the world who watches Bunheads and I'm pretty much obsessed with it.  It's like Gilmore Girls minus Connecticut, Rory, and Luke but adding California, more of Rory's zany Chilton/Yale friends, and dancing! Lots of dancing!  Bunheads is sort of modern, but sort of MGM classic musical.  And it just makes me happy to watch.  Anyways, the lead character wore this really great black dress with leather accents.  I can't find a good pic, but I am definitely looking for something like this for fall.  Also, see Nina Garcia in similar dress below.

Story of the Week: Taylor Swift, Venture Capitalist from New Hampshire

Y'all, I'm so concerned about T Swift.  First, she's dating a boy who's in high school.  Literally he's about to start his senior year. Second, she's practically stalking the Kennedy's. Third, she can't stop dressing in patriotic colors.

We get it.  You're an all American kinda gal.  Fourth, she's become a wedding crasher!!  I love you T, but please don't attack the paparazzi with an umbrella or shave your head anytime soon.  In other news, I CANNOT stop listening to WANEGBT.

Rental of the Week: Like Crazy

Best movie I've seen in forever!  Cried a lot.

Movie Ticket of the Week:  Hit and Run

Getting good reviews and I think Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell are so cute after that whole sloth birthday party.

Happy Weekend!

What Makes Me Cry: Speeches at the Tony Awards

So last Saturday night I attempted to catch up on a week's worth of tv after being on vacation.  I can only imagine this is what it's like to work for a show like The Soup. The highlights were several fantastic moments from the Tonys ( I only watched the first 30 minutes live.)  Considering my affection for awards show speeches I think I've found my new favorite place to find them.  I suppose it makes sense that the talented actors who perform live each week would be the best at extemporaneous speeches.

First, Hugh Jackman accepting a surprise award for his charity efforts while his show ran on Broadway.  The blonde is his wife.  Is Hugh Jackman the greatest guy ever or what?!

Next, these clips from the year in plays.  I totally want to see One Man Two Guvnors and End of the Rainbow looks so tragic and good, especially now that I consider myself to be an expert on Judy Garland.

I totally have a crush on James Corden after watching this wisecracking, voicecracking speech.

And an even bigger crush on Steve Kazee from Once. Holy crap.

Okay who wants to go to NYC with me to see a new play every night?

What Makes Me Cry- Matt Lauer and the Royal Wedding

I know I've blogged about it before, but watching the Royal Wedding nearly a year ago was the greatest tv viewing experience of my life. And there's one moment I'll never forget.

As a loyal Today Show viewer since graduating from college and starting a big girl job, I was obviously tuned into the coverage on NBC. Do you remember when Kate stepped out of the car and paused, so everyone could get a great shot of the dress? She delicately took her father's hand.

Then Matt Lauer, who up until this point, had feigned complete disinterest in all of the royal hoopla, decided to say something.

"I'll only say this once" he ominously began "they have called her Waity Katie . . . and today she will wait NO MORE!!!" The last words came out booming, in a Madonnaesque faux British accent.

It was so absurd, so ridiculously out of place that you couldn't help but die laughing. Except I burst into tears.

The most embarrassing thing about all of this is that I've tried to tell this story several times.

"Omg, Matt Lauer said the dumbest thing during the Royal Wedding"

I'm giggling just thinking about it.

"For some reason he said they have called her Waity . . . Waity . . ."

My eyes fill with tears.

"Waity Katie. "

sniff. sniff.

"But today . . .she . . "

Oh hell. At this point I either after to pretend to die laughing (the appropriate response), immediately change the subject, or fake a coughing fit.

So if you ask me about my favorite part of the royal wedding, I'll probably say Pippa's dress, Harry sneaking a peak as Kate walked down the aisle, or the not one, but two kisses on the balcony.

But now you know truth. Sniff.

P.S. What else makes me cry- Dear John and Superbad

What Makes Me Cry-Dear John

In my opinion, there are two kinds of guys who really screw girls over. The first kind, you can't really blame. They're honest from the beginning. "I'm not looking for a relationship, I've got a lot going on, I'm not good with commitment." Blah, blah, blah. But because girls like to torture themselves they think, "Maybe I could be the one that makes him change . . ." Heads up ladies, this never works. Heads up guys (ha, as if you're reading this) pretend to be one of these guys and then surprise (!!) you're a good guy. Works every time, like the bend and snap. Anyways, when these guys inevitably peace out, I think girls are like "What a jackass but . . . I saw that coming."

Mr. Big was one of these guys. Carrie only landed him because that wasn't real life, that was a movie.

Then there's the other type of guys. These fellows are into girls from the beginning. They confidently talk about the future. They craft detailed, enchanting, unsolicited compliments. They remember random details and think embarrassing quirks are adorable. So what if sometimes they seem a bit weird, or they don't call when they say they will. They always have the a perfect, completely understandable excuse. So when these guys end up to be jerks it's not only incomprehensible, its incorrigible.

I just know John Mayer is one of these guys. How else has he dated every celeb hottie out there? It makes my blood boil to think of him sending whimsical bouquets of flowers, writing personalized songs, crafting the perfect text message to send while he's out of town and then giving some absurd interview to Playboy. That's why Taylor Swift's song about him, Dear John, totally gets to me.

First of all its mean. Like really, really nasty. She's not just saying "you're a jerk" she's saying "what the hell is wrong with you?!?" But then, towards the end, she sings " But I took your matches before fire could catch me so don't look now, I'm shining like fireworks over your sad empty town." I know its supposed to sound all " haha, I'm over you" but it sounds to me like she's till so, so sad. Tear.

(side note: Taylor's pretty lips and weird pantomine is a bit distracting here but I couldnt find the song to listen to that I could embed. If you're really up for a good cry, just download it.)

I just know Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz and Minka Kelly listen to this song and as they drive home from some Hollywood party and just sob and sob . . . until they pull into the driveway of their Beverly Hills Mansion.

What Makes Me Cry- Superbad

In Mindy Kaling's completely awesome book, she wrote this sweet little chapter about "non-traumatic" things that make her cry. Because I'm one of those annoying people who interrupts your story to tell you how it relates to me, I immediately started making my own crying list before I finished the first paragraph. I also started making a "things that make me happy" list because I think that's what Oprah would do.

Now obviously I cry at the ending of most romantic comedies, any holiday Hallmark commercials, and when I mess up the wing of my eyeliner when I'm already 10 minutes late. But there's a few completely random pop culture moments that just make me lose it.

Like this scene from Superbad. First of all I LOVE Superbad in all its raunchy, dorky glory. It's without a doubt one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. But I also love this scene between Jonah Hill as Seth and Emma Stone as Jules. Seth is crying because the night hasn't gone as planned and that's just so high school. Every night and every moment seems like your last chance to really make something happen. When you're a senior in high school you have so much freedom but you're not at all independent. You feel kind of helpless and a lot of times hopeless -which is how Seth feels here. And that's why a drunken rant in a gross-out movie (starring two 2012 Oscar nominees!) makes me tear up.
