Weekend Rentals- 2/10/12

Another weekend, another list of movie rental recommendations from the 2008 Oscars!

As I was perusing this list, I realized that I missed out on seeing many of the nominated movies that year. I skimmed my journal and realized why- 2008 was a HUGE year for romantic comedies- 27 Dresses, Made of Honor, Definitely Maybe, Forgetting Sarah Marshall AND Sex and the City were released. So you can guess where I spent the majority of my time in the movie theater. Anyways, on to Oscar nominated flicks, viewed and recommended by me, when I wasn't sobbing over Mr. Big:

Atonement- utterly depressing, but impressively gorgeous. James McAvoy is wonderful.

Juno- Diablo Cody's witty, quirky, touching script and the entire cast is perfection.

" Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your ass. That's the kind of person that's worth sticking with."

Ratatouille- Not the best Pixar movie, but isn't every one pretty great anyway?

Enchanted- one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. If you lived with me this year (Tia, Meg, Lauren) chances are you heard me singing "How Do You Know" or "Happy Working Song" oh, about a million times.

Have a great weekend!

Tuesdays with Nora- When Harry Met Sally

Well here we are for the first installment of Tuesdays with Nora. Now if I was actually counting down my fave Nora movies, this would probably be at the top of my list, as it is my very favorite movie of all time. Ms. Ephron wrote this movie herself, and also produced it. Because there's a few other movies that deserve some love in February, we're starting with When Harry Met Sally- which I wrote about for the first time in October.

Noticeably absent in my love letter to a romantic comedy I adore? Style! Do you know why I ignored it? Because Sally's clothes are HORRIBLE. The 80's was a great decade to be born in, if I do say so myself, but the fashion- atrocious! So big and overpowering and not at all flattering. The fact that Meg Ryan manages to look cute in this

and this

and this
just shows us that she is perhaps the most adorable actress of all time. Sally wears a lot of Annie Hall, menswear inspired looks and while I've never been a big fan of masculine dressing (not surprised?) I figured I'd try out a few looks in honor of Sally Albright.

Boyfriend cardigan

Blazer and cuffed trouser

Blazers, button-downs, and lace-up oxfords

One of the most unique (and most memorable) parts of When Harry Met Sally are all of the "how we met" vignettes featuring older couples reflecting on their relationship. I'm going to tell you something that's probably going to break your heart, but those are actors. They're not real people. Ugh, its hard to type. However, there is a silver lining! When Nora Ephron would get writer's block, she would interview people who worked for the production company. She liked some of their stories about meeting their spouse so much that she worked them into the screenplay and re-shot the scenes with actors.

Today was not my favorite day. I spent most of the afternoon in stress vortex over grad school and when I sat down to write this I thought about saying "Sally wore blazers and so did I. The end." But I just watched these sweet stories and now I feel wonderful. I love "how we met" stories because every couple has one. They might not be particularly funny or dramatic or romantic, but falling in love means at some point there was a look or a conversation or a moment that changed the rest of your life. If you don't know the story of how your parents or your grandparents or your neighbors met- ask them. Nora did and look what happened! She applied the rules of real life- to a romantic comedy.

Cool it, Gisele

I'm not sure why I feel the need to do a recap of the Superbowl. It's not an awards show or movie or anything I usually love, but it seems like everyone is talking about it, and I like to stay relevant.

So, I didn't have a team to root for, but was kind of hoping Tom Brady wouldn't win. Why, you ask? First, he left Bridget Moynahan when she was pregnant to hook up with Gisele. After Mr. Big AND John Cusak left her, you would think she could catch a break, but no!

Then Gisele was all "childbirth was not at all painful and I loved it, and I stayed in shape throughout my whole pregnancy so it wasn't at all hard to get my body back and I consider Bridget's son my own son." Blah blah blah.

We're jealous enough already Gisele. Cool it.

THEN she sent out an email to her friends and family asking that they all pray for her husband on his tough day. He's getting millions of dollars to play football, not going through chemotherapy. Then she was caught on tape bad-mouthing Tom's teammates. So . . . Go Patriots?

Ok to be honest, I only tuned it to see Madonna and her biceps put on a halftime show. And I thought she killed it! She looked AMAZING and just generally had a great time. The stage was INCREDIBLE. Also what was that guy in the toga doing on the wire?! Mind-blowing!

Nothing can compete with this show though.

I will forever remember this as the first and only time we got to see JT and Brit Brit on stage together as a couple. Let's all take a moment. Or an hour, as I just watched this 4 times in a row.

Saturday Night Glamour

I'm getting ready to go out and watching a black and white musical. (One of my very favorite things to do.) Tonight on TCM, Ginger Rogers is rocking a white jumpsuit and sophisticated bob in The Gay Divorcee- in 1934.

Nearly 80 year later, I am obsessed with this look.

Love.

Weekend Rentals- 2/3/12

What to rent this weekend? Check out some movies that were recognized at the 2007 Oscars!

Little Miss Sunshine- When I first saw this I was with my boyfriend (who was not at all my boyfriend at the time.) He told me I was laughing so hard he was afraid I was going to pass out. But seriously, that scene with the stuck horn on the minivan?! Lol!

The Devil Wears Prada- Obviously Meryl's performance. But also- Stanely Tucci, Emily Blunt, the makeover?!? The scene where Miranda Priestly says "Oh, don't be silly - EVERYONE wants this. Everyone wants to be us." How many times can you see this movie? Never enough!

Dreamgirls- Okay, a little long-winded. But Eddie Murphy steals the show- even from Jennifer Hudson. Except for the "I'm Telling You" big performance. When I saw this movie, the entire theater burst into applause. Totally necessary.

An Inconvenient Truth- Why does it 70 degrees in January in 2012? Al Gore knew five years ago!

Happy Feet- Penguins who tap dance. I'll take it.

The Prestige- I freaking LOVE this movie. Suspenseful, magical, melodramatic and a little bit creepy. Just thinking about the end gives me goosebumps. Also, Hugh Jackman vs. Christian Bale. Yes.

Happy Weekend!

Hot Pants, Cool Hats, Pink Hair

I like to think that I take some risks (good or bad) when it comes to personal style. I like wearing new trends- especially if they've trickled down to Forever 21 where I can try them without making an investment. Like skinny jeans in every color of the rainbow! I first saw celebs wearing these last Spring (or was it the year before?) and then I saw a beautiful assortment in H&M last week which means, you guessed it, I'll be buying these soon.

However there are some styles that I am really attracted to, but common sense tells me I should never, ever go there. Let's take this month's issue of Glamour magazine.

Doesn't Rachel McAdams look adorable in her button down and . . . hot pants?
Glamour actually tried this last month with the Kardashians.

Are we going to go an entire year's subscription sans pants? Only time will tell. I personally think its adorable. Yeah, you heard me.

Remember when Sienna went on on the town like 3 years ago?

Then Gaga, and Britney, and Katy in concert- it was only a matter of time for Allie Hamilton.

Let's take another trend- one that I first posted about here. The wide, floppy, felt 70's hat. I think I remember Vanessa in it first?

Kim K, again.

Its so glamourous and Ive seriously tried one on in various Nordstrom hat departments across the state of Florida. But in what world would this be an appropriate look for me? I honestly am at a loss.

So recently, my beloved Lauren Conrad tweeted a pic of her hair in a bun, with pink tips.

I love it! Last summer she went totally rainbow waves which I loved even more.

Carrie had some pink extensions when she sang with Steven Tyler. Maybe that's my option? For those times when I . . . sing with Steven Tyler?

Have you seen Selena lately? Adore the way these streaks look on her!

And it was Rachel who actually debuted this look first- years ago!

And, as most trends go, we've come full circle. Speaking of Rachel McAdams, how do we feel about this trailer?

I mean as the first "chick flick" that's been released in AGES I am obviously going to see it immediately. But I just kind of feel like, really? Is this a poor man's The Notebook? "I read to her and she remembers." What is Allie Hamilton doing in this movie? We'll see. Let's all take a moment to enjoy one of the greatest trailers of all time, and one of the greatest movies of all time.

Do you want to see The Vow? What are some trends you love but would never try?

This Actually Happened to Me

Except without the cozy kitchen of Orchard House, the sisterly love, Belle Gardner's ball, and the actual loss of hair.

There was a candle on my kitchen counter, a laptop blocking that candle, and I had to reach around my computer to unplug my camera. I think you understand how things went down.

My hair still smells like burnt feathers and I screamed louder than all of the March women combined.
