Happy Weekend- What's Up Tampa?

Happy Weekend!  Well, I'm still in Florida.  For the past week I've been in Tampa, which is basically my hometown except its not. At all.  If you're not familiar with Florida, I tell you I'm from Tampa.  If you've been to Tampa, I tell you I'm from St. Pete/Clearwater.  And if you've been to St. Petersburg, then I'm proud to tell you I'm from Seminole.  But that's another story.

So for the past 10 years I've basically been claiming to be from Tampa which is a total lie.  IAnyways, I what I really want to tell you about Tampa is that in 9th grade I went to a Backstreet Boys concert and Mandy Moore opened for them.  Poor 15 year old Mandy wobbled around the stage in her stilettos yelling "Whats up Tamp-puh?!"

I'm blogging in a room with 3 of my best friends and they all have this exact memory.  That's what makes childhood friends so wonderful- not shared interests but shared memories of 90's pop stars.

Story of the Week:  Does NoahCalhoun=ChristianGrey? 

I have a lot of opinions about 50 Shades- more on that soon.  But I have even more thoughts on Ryan Gosling being cast.  And the thoughts are NO.  Anyone who thinks that an A-list actor wants to be cast in this movie is kidding themselves.  This story is for soap opera hunks and ABC family starlets only.  

Rental of the Week:
Mandy Moore, all grown up, no heels, still long blond hair. I LOVE Tangled, especially the song in the scene above. 

Look of the Week:

 Anne Hathaway, another Disney darling.  Its not so much that I love her dress, but that she looks amazing despite the grandma dress and short hair.  She's getting married tomorrow!  It takes some guts to get married in short hair.  Better than the alternative?

NPR Interview of the Week:Amy Adams on Fresh Air.

I've been listening to so much NPR on the road but hearing one of my favorite actresses talk about being a Disney princess was my favorite thing all week!

Movie Ticket of the Week:  
And speaking of Amy Adams . . .The Master is getting phenomenal reviews . . . it just seems like a lot to take on.  I'll take one for the team and get back to you.

Brave Review

One of the bad things about going to the movies at least once a week is that I've seen movie trailers countless times before I see the actual movie.  This means I usually come into the theater with my own expectations and understanding of the plot.

Take Brave for example.  Based on the intriguing (and rather touching) trailer I thought this was going to be an inspiring story about a young princess who blazes her own trail and doesn't have time to wait around for a prince to come.  Considering Disney's track record for creating the usual ladies in waiting ( I still love them!) I thought this would be a refreshing change.

Actually, Brave is about the relationship between mother and daughter.  Considering Disney's track record for creating motherless princesses with evil stepmothers ( I still hate them!) I think this was a refreshing change.  

Being a Disney/Pixar collobaroation we can obviously expect a lot of fun, clever jokes, and gorgeous animnation- Merida's red curls are especially breathtaking.  But I couldn't help but miss the story that I thought was coming to see.  A princess striking an arrow through the hearts of her potential suitors?  Awesome.  A teenage girl fighting with her mom?  Eh, we've all been there.

I would totally DVR this

Trashy reality tv and Disney princesses? Best idea ever. Although I feel they missed out on an obvious "Sleeping Beauty with an Ambien addiction" joke.

Weekend Rentals- 2/10/12

Another weekend, another list of movie rental recommendations from the 2008 Oscars!

As I was perusing this list, I realized that I missed out on seeing many of the nominated movies that year. I skimmed my journal and realized why- 2008 was a HUGE year for romantic comedies- 27 Dresses, Made of Honor, Definitely Maybe, Forgetting Sarah Marshall AND Sex and the City were released. So you can guess where I spent the majority of my time in the movie theater. Anyways, on to Oscar nominated flicks, viewed and recommended by me, when I wasn't sobbing over Mr. Big:

Atonement- utterly depressing, but impressively gorgeous. James McAvoy is wonderful.

Juno- Diablo Cody's witty, quirky, touching script and the entire cast is perfection.

" Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your ass. That's the kind of person that's worth sticking with."

Ratatouille- Not the best Pixar movie, but isn't every one pretty great anyway?

Enchanted- one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. If you lived with me this year (Tia, Meg, Lauren) chances are you heard me singing "How Do You Know" or "Happy Working Song" oh, about a million times.

Hey Girl

Last night I had a wonderful reunion/dinner/girls night out/laughfest with my best friends All of My Reasons and Worthy of Being Storied. I don't like to brag, but I'm pretty sure I have the greatest friends in the world.

We all wore some shade of purple, completely unplanned. This is pretty typical of us. We often show up to hang out wearing varying matching outfits. Kind of like Destiny's Child?

And, as we discussed last night, we are all varying levels of bootylicious.

Anyway, I have been tentativley planning a day at Disney World when I am in Orlando in October. and recruiting friends to meet me there. Last night before dinner I bought this silly tshirt featuring two heartwarming memories from my childhood.

Why Laguna AND Mickey? Who cares! So I decided this purchase solidifed my plans. See you in October Mickey!

And while we are on the topic of Disney . . . I discovered this video on Jezebel this morning. Omg, hilarious! We know that's what Belle was actually thinking the whole time.
