Happy Weekend- Coastal Living

I think we all have a fantasy life.  Mine involves living on the Florida gulf coast, going to the beach every day, wearing flip flops and never bothering to straighten my hair.  Basically I'd live out a Kenny Chesney song 24/7.

After spending the week in Naples, and doing some significant people watching/ lunchtime eavesdropping, I've realized that even people on a permanent vacation have problems too.  Like the women at Cheesecake Factory who debated how much botox is too much.  (I'd say five injections ago, ladies.)  And a grumpy old man who cursed an afternoon thunderstorm that interrupted his tee time.

But check out that view . . .

What I've been up to lately:
Reviews of Hit and Run and Lawless
MTAD for Trouble with the Curve and The Big Wedding
Confessions and Style Aspirations

Behind the scenes clip of the week:

Its going to change our lives, right?  I'm so excited.

Rental of the Week:

Speaking of movie musicals, the last one to win Best Picture was Chicago in 2002.  Love it?  Watch it again and sing along!  Never seen it?  What is wrong with you?
Look of the Week:

Speaking of little dresses and razzle dazzle, I saw this window shopping in Nordstrom and fell in love.  I want to wear it to a New Year's party with a faux bob, glitter headband and all that jazz.

Story of the Week:
Kanye and Kim get a Kat.

Is anyone else hoping Kim gets out of her marriage to Kris quickly so we can have a Kim and Kanye wedding?  The sheer absurdity of it actually gives me chills.  Cute kitty though.

Movie Ticket of the Week:

Justin Randall Timberlake on the big screen.  Don't let me down!

Happy Weekend!

Gentlemen Callers

When I used to go on dates in high school, I was at a complete loss for what to wear. There's only two things more embarrassing than being a teenage girl.

1) Wearing the wrong thing on a date as a teenage girl
2) Asking the teenage guy you're going out with what you should wear

So my mom and I devised a great little system. I would be totally ready to go and wearing a cute top I had picked out. Then my mom would peer out the window when my date arrived. She would yell to me what he was wearing- jeans! shorts! (are there any more options for a 17 year old boy?) And then I would quickly decide what bottoms I needed to wear- Hollister jeans! Forever 21 skirt! (Are there any other options for a 17 year old girl?)

Oh, halter top and American Eagle denim skirt while dancing on the beach? Another good outfit choice from my high school years.

Anyways, I love telling this story because it makes it seem like I had all of these dates in high school and that my mom was all sorts of Mrs. Bennett from Pride and Predjudice/ Amanda Wingfield from The Glass Menagerie asking if I had a "gentleman caller." Neither of these points are true, but I promise I really did get dressed at the last minute thanks my mom's spying.

I was reminded of this the other week when I was getting dressed to go out with my boyfriend. We were planning on going to our favorite mexican/sushi restaraunt so I was wearing a floral tank top and cropped jeans. Similar to this pic of Amanda Seyfriend on the March issue of Glamour.

Except I had already dried my hair and my shirt actually had a back. As I was headed out the door I got a text. We were trying a new place downtown. So I switched out the jeans for my new pink maxi skirt (Old Navy for $12,) snapped a pic, and headed on my way.

It would be convenient if this was the look from the April issue of Glamour, but instead we have this shot of Lauren Conrad.

Lounging topless in her underwear? I guess LC is also waiting to get dressed for a date.

A Tale of Two Shoes

Sometime between Carrie Bradshaw and Lady GaGa... normal women started wearing really tall heels. Fortunately for me, this transition took place soon after I graduated from college and start wearing heels regularly and also when I started dating a giant, therefore making some sort of platform mandatory for carrying on a conversation.

I've found that when you wear tall shoes you often elicit comments from strangers, which is fine, because no one wears metallic gladiator sandals to fly under the radar. However these comments are usually "how do you walk in those?" or " I could never walk in those." If you've ever felt compelled to say this to someone, this is your public service announcement to stop. Its not at all offensive, its just... what is the appropriate response? "Well I just put one foot in front of the other. .." or "oh, sure you could, lets try!" seem unnecessary. I usually just smile and say "oh, haha . . . they are actually comfortable!" Which is at least half of a lie. I'm not hobbling around in pain but obviously some orthopedic contraption would be a bit more soothing on my feet.

I've posted about the Waleos before, and although I have some other shoes I really love, these are probably the tallest shoes that I wear to work and everyday outings. One day while wearing these royal blue pumps, I headed to the post office on my lunch break. As I left and walked to my car, a woman walking next to me said " wow! those are some crazy shoes!" "Oh, haha!" I responded (of course.) "And they're really tall!" she continued. "Yes! Just the way I like them!" I replied as I proudly stepped off the curb and twisted my ankle. I limped to my car and waited until I had driven at least a mile away to check out the damage. No bruising, just my ego.
Undeterred, I wore my leopard print kicks to work. As I headed into my office, I passed a woman who works in the same building. We exchanged hellos and then she stopped. "Oh my god your shoes!" she squealed. " I just had to say something!" "Oh, haha!" I responded (seriously what is wrong with me?) But she didn't stop there. " Those.are.HILARIOUS!!!" she howled. Really? Hilarious? Now shoes can be funny. Like these.

Or maybe these.

But are my shoes . . . hilarious? Oh well.

Now I totally understand where these women are coming from. I constantly wonder why Carrie Bradshaw must trot around NYC in her Louboutins and can't just walk like a normal person. This is especially bad in the "A Woman's Right to Shoes" episode which I used to think was so totally petty and ridiculous but now I'm all "Preach Carrie!" which just shows how old and unmarried I am. Anyways, after all that nonsense with Tatum O'Neil, Carrie has to put on her new Manolos on and play hop scotch down the street?!

Also, sometimes I am concerned about Beyonce dancing in heels. Even during the single women leotard phase I was amazed that she could lunge and squat in those things- its like a Cirque Du Solei trick.

I mentioned that Amanda Seyfriend wore some killer heels to sprint around with JT during In Time. Good for her, but I couldn't help but think that if I was literally running for my life, I might have taken off my shoes.

In fact, about a month ago I was running a half marathon in Florida. Around mile 9 a blister started to form on my left foot, and I really couldn't take it. I decided my best option was to stop, remove my shoe, adjust my sock and continue on. Well, once I stopped, it was really hard to get started again. My pace dropped, I considered vomiting, and I apparently looked so horrible when I finished that a medic called for a wheelchair. ( I politely declined.) So I probably should have left my shoe on.

I'm not really sure how to wrap up this rambling post except to say, I guess we should let women decide on whatever kind of footwear works best for them. And if you're the one wearing the highest heels (or cushiest sneakers) keep your head high and keep your shoes on. Come to think of it, the only girl who ever benefited from losing a shoe was Cinderella.

And those things were made of glass! Even GaGa doesn't go there.

In Time Review

Halfway through the previews before In Time, I whined to my boyfriend "I will never see ANY of these movies." "Be honest" he replied, "you wouldn't even see this one if Justin wasn't the star."

Valid point. But I did and now I'm here to give you a review! I have to say that although I understood the basic concept of In Time from the trailer, the idea of time = money didn't really resonate with me until I actually saw the movie. So if you run out of money, you run out of time. When you run out of time . . . you die. Believe me when I say this was glaringly clear from the start and it provided some painfully intense scenes.

I felt that In Time had a bit of an identity crisis. It was partly an incredibly relevant social commentary. In fact, I actually whispered "Omg they are the 99% And he is the 1%!" I mean, the release of this movie could not have been more timely. Pun intended.

But In Time also had a suspenseful, mad-cap, Bonnie and Clyde feel. Which was enjoyable to watch, but sort added to the implausability of it all. I firmly believe that too often films are expected to have far greater meaning than pure entertainment, so this isn't a complaint!

Ok, can we talk about Justin now? Y'all, he is a movie star!! I'm torn because I NEED new JT music but I so loved his turn as an action star. And you know Justin loved (literally) punching his former boy band persona to the curb. It was 100% his movie and I thought he was great. I think Justin has made incredibly smart choices in the movies he has signed on to.

Justin once again has great chemistry with his leading lady. Amanda Seyfriend is so gorgeous in this movie, I can't even handle it. Her relationship with Justin's character takes some interesting turns throughout the movie, and, as in anyone's JT relationship fantasies (maybe just mine?) she just so happens to be fabuously dressed throughout.

Apparently in the future we will wear sky high heels, dresses made with rich fabrics and fitted waists, and impeccable eyeliner. Looking forward to it!

Go see In Time if you're in the mood for an entertaining flick that is also going to give you something to talk about when people bring up Occupy Wall Street. Or go see it because Justin Timberlake is hot.

InTime, rated "PG-13," action/drama, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, B
